What is plasma half-life and why does it matter?
Plasma half-life (t½) is the time required for the concentration of a compound in blood plasma to fall by 50%. It determines how frequently a compound must be dosed to maintain a target effect window, when the compound will reach steady state with repeated dosing, and how long to wait for full washout before discontinuing or switching protocols.

The visualizer renders its plasma decay curve with reference lines marking the half-life point (50% remaining, amber) and the approximate washout point (~97% cleared, red). Below the chart, stat cards show duration of active effect, bioavailability by administration route, steady-state timing, and washout period. Use Compare Mode to plot two compounds on the same time axis side by side.
Understanding the pharmacokinetic stats
- Duration of Active Effect
- The window during which the compound is expected to exert a meaningful biological effect — distinct from plasma half-life for compounds whose downstream effects outlast their plasma clearance (e.g., Khavinson bioregulators).
- Bioavailability by Route
- How much of the compound reaches systemic circulation depending on the administration route — subcutaneous (SC), intramuscular (IM), intravenous (IV), intranasal, or oral. Most peptides are poorly bioavailable orally due to GI degradation.
- Steady-State Timing
- How long it takes to reach stable plasma levels with repeated dosing. Steady state is typically achieved after 4–5 half-lives of consistent administration.
- Washout Period
- The time required for the compound to clear sufficiently from the system — approximately 5 half-lives for most compounds, at which point less than 3% remains in plasma.
Khavinson bioregulator note
Khavinson bioregulators (Epithalon, Pinealon, Vilon, Thymalin, and related short peptides) have plasma half-lives measured in minutes but trigger gene-expression changes that persist for weeks to months. The decay chart shows plasma clearance only. The biologically relevant duration is the gene-expression effect window shown in the stat cards.
